Windows 99 is a working recreation of an operating system that never existed: a Windows from the last day of 1999, the clock stopped at December 31. It runs entirely in your browser at win99.dev, with its own programs, games, Internet Explorer, MS-DOS, and a chat room.

It began in February 2025 as a six-week class project and became an MFA thesis on interface design before the attention economy. It asks what software felt like before it was built to hold our attention and harvest our behavior, and what we gave up without noticing.

Windows 99 is free. It has no advertising and no analytics, and nothing you do inside it leaves your browser. The code is open source under the MIT licence.

What your support pays for

The operating system itself costs nothing to serve. A handful of small servers do cost money every month: they run Windows Chat, the online games, and Translator. Your support keeps those running.
